...Been working on the logo for my "Zombie Dinner Party" project. I have been working on the two girls (Meana and Vices) inbetween my small son's school stuff and in-transition career stuff ("Go, Promatch, go!"), and I should have something here soon.

...this is just a cobbled together scanning of one piece scanned four ways on a small scanner, fit together like a intricate jigsaw. I will have to go to Kinkos to get a proper complete scan so I can make prints or lithos or whatever of this and sell the limited run of posters. (original art is 14" by 17") Then I can point at this and reply, "This is what I was working on in 2010. No particular month, the whole year." It will be between us chickens that it was more like two years.
That was a joke...It was only one year.

They are right, we do need a font specifically for Sarcasm.

Of course, I need to have the others side by side to compare and contrast and gaze upon so I can say, "Yes, this is quite fine and on we go to the next part" or, "No, this is quite really, really wrong now that I see them all together as a set and I must go back to the drawing board, I could never pronounce this as the better work I have done." Like, the space between the frame and the logo and frame- dead space, or OH OH, how I forgot to put a drop shadow behind the frame!! It may just be me but the logo looks too stark, not flashy and worked out enough (but zombies are not really polished shiny folks). Still... a stylistic slime pool to frame the text on top would not hurt to try, some like colored organs and vittles sparsely paced. ...two birds w/ one stone- my dead space at the top sides of the golden frame...slime on the wall! Zombies are most probably not tidy eaters.

So I did, I googled myself. I am #5 on the list of links. A few years ago, I was #1.

(I want to thank my son's girlfriend for all her help, and tell her my son has good taste in being with her. [He is six at this time, and to tell the truth, the concept of a girlfriend is to him, a girl who is a friend and he has many but no one that serious. He has crushes, and I will have to discover if that is abnormal or not for his age. At least he has no desire to wed his mother. He plans on marrying the girl who gives him extra toys in his happy meal. He is cute and gets free stuff, but he is no sl_t. {...now I wonder if I have crossed some line in trying to be funny...} Anyway, I thank my son's gf because I want to remember to welcome and show investment in any person who enters his life and brings him happiness, so I am thanking her right now as a strategic first strike years before the fact because that is how I do things, maybe.] I also wish to thank his (yet to-be-met) second mother for her patience and love and her dogs, because my son loves dogs.)

This art-blog is not personal (or at least the original intent was that).

This has never been my place to gripe about bosses or co-workers, or write a personal journal and up-date the public to my intimate thoughts and feelings.

I don't want people to be confused by my personal rant about how this is all not personal, nothing personal is meant by my getting up close and personal with this non-personal triade...

It is not personal; like the skull image I made above (and below). I made that May 1993, for an assignment in U/D Drawing, the theme was "Pollution." I don't have any personal skull-centric bias, I am not goth or emo or death-driven. I just like to make art and sometimes it can be concided that I am pretty good at it, by some people.

Don't make something personal that is not. Look at the big picture.

Seriously, look. It is pretty nice and took an acceptable time to make, and was not done lickety quick (a week it took). I wish my scan bed was big enough to get the whole thing so it would not appear clipped at the top, the bottom, and the left side

Back in 1993, I had the job of assisting, for six months until I graduated from UCSB, at taking groups through a rope course/an obstacle course where we taught them teamwork, and assisted them in learning to communicate and problem-solve as a team. A lot of things linger from that time in my life, but the one I recall most vividly today is that without support, someone is going to fall. And, people don't rise by being isolated.

Try watching three seasons of "Veronica Mars," back-to-back, see if you don't start getting depressed by the time you get to the 3rd season. Whether it is the subject matter (rape, murder, heartbreak,...) or that maybe you could have been doing a cart-load of artwork in the time you spent watching this addictive show starring the ultra-cutie Kirsten Bell, you can get a little down in yourself.

I watch because I went to high school twenty-odd years ago with a girl that looked like the lead actress, I thought she was the bee's knees, or something.

I think she sells metal siding now. If only she had gotten into after-school sleuthing, who knows where she'd have wound up?

After 30 days, or so of being unemployed, I start my new job with elevated position and elevated pay. I am the luckiest person on earth, I am just glad no one was hurt, the only karmatic re-arrangement was backing into my garage door and ripping my car in the process the day of my final interview. Not too bad compared to the radiation therapy for cancer I went through to see the birth of my son healthy after he was in danger of not being born due to complications, or the ex-wife emptying our bank account when she flew away to NC and my getting my first artist job in Las Vegas 30 days later. Now to cash in on the "Cash for Clunkers" thing that just happens to be running at precisely the right moment for me.

I think the tiger is torked I gave him a 'emo' blue eyeshadow make-up job. I don't blame him.

No, there is no time warp. The date of the picture says the 19th, and the posted date is the 9th. There was a black hole near by Earth at the time. I think that is the explanation but I am no astrophysicist. I am an artist.

I watched "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" last week, and I thought it was fantastic (but I tend to think a lot of great movies are fantastic, and that fantastic movies are great. It equals out). It reminded me of my own all night seek-and-find in Los Angeles in 1993, it was a night or two before some famous riot there due either to a trial with OJ or something. Two years later, I ended up married to the girl that I went on this all-night adventure of driving around LA with. I did not know her before that night; I had been introduced to her four times before that over the years (1991-93) but she never remembered me. Once, just before she broke both arms riding her bike falling down a hill, then during a flag football game we played together in the rain with people from my apartment building, then on Holloween night in Isla Vista, then once in the hall of my building w/ her boyfriend that lived there.
We got divorced four years later, and without her I never would have wound up here in Las Vegas 10 years ago, jobless and penniless then and ultimately invincible.
And, now I am waking up in Vegas every morning. By the by, I love the Katy Perry song, Waking Up in Vegas. I wonder if she was living in Santa Barbara at the same time I was, 1991-1993?

New York Tattoo Convention 2009

I found a photograph online from the NYC Tattoo convention that just happened mid-May, there is a woman in a black hoody w/ black framed glasses and dark hair pulled back in a ponytail, showing off her lower arm which in this low rez photo looks like my drawings of the jumbled mass of threads/strings (which I kind of think of as my "thing").

I am trying to track down a better resolution so I can see if it is just my imagination, or not.

NEW NEWS!!! (6/22/09) I have found out there is this brilliant 24 year old woman in the United Kingdom that does similar stuff but better than me (or at least is more surreal rather than abstract, subjective than objective, or the other way around) in the varied use she makes in the use of the lines on DeviantArt.com. Moreover, she is a hell of a lot more popular than me, I've been doing my thing since 1995, she since 2007 as far as I can tell. I guess the european market is a lot more open to scary creepy line work.

I have had a bad time sleeping as of late, I think I have had 12 hours for the whole week. I had to stay home yesterday because lack of sleep should be an excuse, but I am back today. I watched, "Terminator: Salvation," "Drag Me To Hell," "Star Trek," and "Dance Flick" yesterday then came home and watched two hours of "TrueBlood." And then I slept for a while, until 1 am.
I woke up and tried to figure out who the nameless guy in the drawing above is.
Near as I can decipher "he" cannot breathe in outer space, or shoot laser beams out his eyes. It does have super strength and almost complete invunerability, and can fly (but since he can not go out into outer space, he is a homebody). And, everybody on his planet is like him, so when the Space Nazis came to conquer his home, the S.N. got their rears kicked. His people are very intelligent, it is just that they do not have hands or digits to use tools, so they cannot make space suits or rocket ships. Maybe the tails are their adaptation to that lacking.
This is what I was thinking of at 1 am this morning, just so you know.

My Grandmother

Stella Bernice Brock Chubb passed away today at age 91. She was my friend, my ally, my grandmother.
She helped teach me to read using Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck comic books and a tape recorder. She made me tollhouse chocolate chip cookies. She watched over me and believed in me. I could not have asked for a better grandmother.
I am stuck for a way to fully honor her, to show my appreciation for all the tiny and huge things she did with me and for me in my life time.
All I have right now is this. A few words to send out over the internet, a few words to say she is now gone. A few words to say she existed.

She was born in 1918. She got married at 16 and was married for over 70 years, I think. She wished more people in her life had called her, "Stella," but most people called her Bernice, or "B."
She was,.. and now all I have that is tangible of her are photos of her. Maybe also, this right here in my art blog, for however long the internet sticks around.

I just wanted to say a little about her, get my grief out right now. Do something as I cannot do much else being so far away from my family.

It has always been a dream of mine to go and continue my education, get my MFA. To do this, the application requires, "Three Recommendation letters sent directly to Graduate Coordinator from individuals practicing, teaching, or employed in the field of fine art, attesting to the applicants ability and competence in his or her chosen concentration."
Now I don't know about you, and I don't want to get too personal but you've seen my page here, who exactly is going to recomend ME attesting to MY ability and competance? I mean, really? I need some ideas, as the deadline is Feb. 1st, where do I go to find people that might respect me enough AND write me a nice letter, AND find three of those kind of people that are ALSO practicing, teaching, or employed in the field of fine art?

Seriously through, any artists want to get to know me and become familiar with my works with the end result being they could feel justified in helping me fullfill a life-long dream of higher education, and write me a glowing recommendation? Otherwise, I will just have to contact my old college professors and get new ones from them to replace the older ones they wrote me before, which is inconvenient as they go on sabbaticals and not always timely.

And, there is no rush, who has money to go to grad school anyways, plus twenty class hours a week on top of a five year old I take care of and work?

I had a strange dream that actress Allison Mack and I were a cartoon crime-fighting team last night. And, then it got stranger when Sierra Reed and Erinn Lobdell from the TV Show Survivor were in my dream. When I was a small child, my mum had a friend who had a house on the side of a hill, and I guess they meet in an art class, so this woman had a huge studio stretching the back of the house overlooking the valley. Total fantastic clutter of easels and desks and paint and brushes and books, and I fell in love. I want a huge enormous creative space that I never have to apoligize for or what-not.
I want the whole brass band, I want to throw huge wonderful parties exhibiting my art works, I want a space to create those future art works, I want to not have to throw everything in a box if someone visits me because where I create art right now is also where someone would have to sleep if I had visitors that wanted to sleep. I want people to not sleep in my space.
I need a bigger house.
No sleep in my art space. I get very little done having to pack things up and unpack things again.
I want automony.

I don't think this piece translates well here, when it is so frakking beautiful on paper. There is something about being able to focus in on the brush work, the texture of the paper and seeing how it uniquely directs the ink that can never be replicated, the way it flows I mean.
Anyway, this is just the first step in the long trail, I am due to start the larger format (30" by42") of white charcoal on black paper a day or two after May 30th and then I wil lgo back to a smaller format of regular size bristol paper of black ink on white. I should look into going to an art store and getting scratch board, I think it would go nicely, white on a black field.
I am not a 100% pleased with the above image, but it was a good starting point and I wanted to do a simplified version first. The ones following will be more complex but along this theme.

I'm guessing zero. I think he is correct, and I am wondering about all those long college classes discussing art that I took. I could have been dancing about architecture instead, getting exercise.

Did you know Abe Lincoln filed bankruptcy five (5) times? Hopefully that is not consecutively, but still, even great men of history have problems. Makes my problems and events seem minor and finite and recoverable-from, but when I go to the theatre, I demand the door be locked and I have a solid wall behind me. Just to be, you know, safe. Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

My mistakes?

-I listed ZOMBIE DINNER PARTY on a public website, and compounded it by mention of PROM NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (two original ideas now wafting through the high seas of internet possible piracy, thank god no one reads this thing and sealed documents with notary marks on them are admissable in every court, maybe even some international ones).
-I did not get an annulment as planned a few months later (then I would not have my Pi and that is no mistake, plus I would have died from cancer).

-I spent too much time believing that person that told me when I was fifteen, that the garbage man had more artistic talent in his small finger than I did or would. It ate away the good things in my lifeand left me with holes full of hot dark hate, acidic burning... Anyway, that is over... For the most part, right?

I find this funny as years ago I had a print out of the original WWII propaganda poster, "When you drive alone, you drive with Hitler" thumbtacked to my cubicle wall, and recently I have been tasked at work with duplicating this art style.
I promise this is not the start of my putting up other people's art on my site in lieu of my own. I just want to warn people to not be spooning Hitler without knowing it.

Here is my work in progress, which is likely to not be used anywhere as there has been a shift in my un-named workplace and someone else will be tasked to complete this, making it the fourth person(s) and/or group to work on it.

Less about the commentary, as I really don't care anymore (it is old news now, let old presidents lie) and maybe never did as I always skipped the Pink song, "Dear Mr. President" as it seemed a little slow and folky and I like her other stuff better. I am the liberalist Liberal I know, and I really know very, very few liberals, so I do not know what that says.
Anyway, track 8 is catchy and it makes me laugh and I made the mistake of listening to it in my rental car with my son and he got very angry at me when I tried skipping it. His ears thankfully hear her saying, "You're cute" and he states it is a very nice song, very jaunty. He has not heard it since that day as I now know track 8 is a bit more directly vulgar than track 3, "Not Fair" which is his real favorite with its twangy country (which I 'hate' as I am not a country music person) which is also surreally vulgar but way over his head.
Either way he has not heard the album but once (or thrice), and he as a 5 year old consumer and expert on fine music to listen or dance to heartily recommends Lily Allen's newest CD to all, young and old.
He also requests, I,"turn it up" when hearing Pink sing about getting in a fight and not paying her ex's bills.

I swore to myself that I would never ever put my son's face on this site, or my own for that matter as this site was not what that was for, but I need a little happiness today.
I found out that at 38 years old, my family (a fraction of them) believe I sold my washing machine to make room for candy and cookie storage (meaning I do not wash clothes or bedsheets, meaning my son wears nothing but unwashed clothes and sleeps in nothing but unwashed sheets, meaning he looks neglectedand smells stinky and I have brain damage).

This picture is totally unrelated, it is just of a happy moment he and I had on our worst day in Hawaii. I hope he never remembers this day, or at least what happened soon after this photo was taken.
I, unfortunately, will remember it until the day I die.
I rarely get my picture taken but on those odd times I do, there is always a story that exists to some abominable darkness hidden out of frame. I would gladly have all copies of my senior picture burnt or destroyed beyond all repair.
...Perhaps when I am wealthy and have the money, I will pay my graduating class to remove my photo from the yearbook.

I am working on this, so this is not done, but if I do finish, I do not know if i will come back and post it. Did I put enough commas in that?

It is not going the way I visualized it and because I never really visualized it, I just started throwing down... I can honestly say it will never be what I (non-existantly) thought it would come to look like. Ink drys too fast, or I work too slow (between running to see what my son is calling to show me on tv that he just saw in a commercial, and inappropriately yelling at him that I hear that they have a new HotWheels playset and no I do not need to see for myself as I saw it last an hour ago and why don't you get your own water as I am trying to do my homework/drawing and I need to do this please and thus making him cry as he only wanted to show me the commercial because he was told his birthday is three months away and he would like to let me know what he fancies and be able to make an informed choice thus cutting the meandering down in the store as he knows my lunch hour is only an hour and not an hour and fifty, or forty but one hour and water is good for him and he'd get it but I am closer to the fridge and he still has problems opening the bottles and he does not want some loaded with sugar drink and we should celebrate that and come to a compromise that cavities are bad and the dentist is not getting any cheaper), it is one thing or another. That is how my house flows, yo.
With a smart kid like that, eight arms to hold him tight with is not enough. I need nine, and to show yelling. and for him to stop trying to show me every toy commercial that ever was broadcast in that hour or two I ask to be left to do art once or twice a week.

I dreamed last night that Faerie (witness protection program, sorry) had four kids and as she was giving birth to the fourth one "Myer", I was watching the other three, "Wendy, Mina, and Pinkle." Me and Pinkle were leaving the hospitial and were caught in the Boer War in the 18th century, spears were being thrown at us and me and the kid were swinging through trees and rope bridges as dark natives shot iron barbs at us. The infant was loading my elephant gun, and then my alarm went off and I woke up.
I thought it was funny. Glad my son, Waffle, was at home with Wendy and Mina, and not at war with me... The kid is like a zombie-magnet, who knows how messed up it would have been if zombies had shown up?

This is page 51, there is no other page 51 like it. All other pages calling themselves the 51st page of a book, whether International Law or whatever kind of book they inhabit, are unique and different from this page 51.
This page 51 is a little messed up, and he looks like he is ready to move. We got a runner here, boys! But, where could he go? What is on his mind, and how far does he think he can get? I don't know book-binding as an art, but I am guessing that this guy is not going to get very far.
As it is, we can not do too much until we get a report of a missing page. It's a law in the book, or a book of law, well whetever it is, it is simply the way we are bound or binded to do things when a page goes missing. 24 hours and then we pound the pages, not that it does anything everytime but pressing the pages sometimes leads to new stories.

I have grokked these new Eharmony ads on TV, pretty shop lady finds artist stud thru the service. Lovely, for them. For me, it is a new avenue to be rejected by women in massive quanties, and a waste of my money. You don't get wit and charm and stuff from quick clickable snack-sized personality-lite-bites, or assumedly so as women quickly page through their six new suitors a day that are emailed them daily. Every women is on there looking for their own artistic stud but they don't have the * to find him, they just don't feel the chemistry, you know?

I could be happier with this one. I could definitely polish it a bit more, take a few steps more and I will but it is now on the backburner as I have no urgency.
1. complete the frame of paint/ink to "frame it.

2. deepen the colors, even out the purple shape for one. The pen I have, was mailed to me with its cap loose so it is in need of replacement. Detail the grey areas.

3. sign my name when I feel better about it in total.
4. re-do the whole thing in mono-tone as I find the colors distracting and unnecessary. They look like polyps to me, disgusting.

Also the text of the book flaring through is starting to wear on me. I have to remember to write down that solution I thought of for that that I keep forgetting to write down...

Sorry, I was hit from behind as I waited at a red light by another car. The bizarre part is that it was the same year and make of my car, the one that hit me.
I have been in no position to post new art work this week. My shoulder and neck has been hurting.
But, oddly not enough for me to not sketch out another few pages this week to be finished and posted sometime in the future. Plus I am awaiting family from out-of-state, so I have been using my freetime to scrubbing the carpet and misc. I noticed I have not dusted, so of course that will be a big problem. I don't dust enough, or I make too much dust.
Making too much dust is definitely a problem.

I do not know if I posted this before, I honestly don't.
It seems half done.
I sketched it out years ago because I was interested in carrying it further in a larger format in oil paint.
The page opposite it in my sketch book is an old japanese proverb about how people are saddened by the rain because they are concerned about getting wet.
I take a shower every morning, and in the summer I will swim in the pool.
...I am not sad.
But I dislike washing dishes by hand, I can never understand how I end up getting my sleeves, pants, and shoes wet. I hate when that happens plus it kills my back leaning over the sink.

Rain does not sadden me.
Sinks do.

After years of trying to get the site to upload my art work, they have finally relented through a bit reluctantly, and I now have stuff on this portfolio site. Which, basically, is everything here that is here all ready but now also is there now and by my saying, "everything" I mean a few things here and there from here... So, not everything at all.
But since I get reaction from that site and comments, which makes my low self esteem soar, that free site has paid for itself already several times.

I keep trying to upload a new image and it is being rejected, due to internal error. But, seeing as how most of what I have uploaded here over the last almost year is bugging... Who knows what is going down with Blogspot?
When it is uploaded, you might not notice the wacky contrasting points of illumination, that I will try to fix with some faint use of white paint. Iif you do... I don't eat pears, so I do not know what a pear looks like illuminated.

Well, it won't win any awards, as-is. In a different media, with better suited colors, I can see potential but as it is right now, nothing much more acn be said or done.
When I made the absent minded mistake of picking up the black pen instead of the dark blue pen and carved a little bit of agony center page, I had the bright idea that I could just make the whole space black and grey, but then I guess I just forgot or thought, "why bother? These colors are not what I wanted as shades anyhow." But, if I thought that, why NOT put a small grey splotch in the center?

Either way, not what I wanted.
I note wrong colors as reason for discontent, I'm a mono-tone person, not multi-shade.

Odd bit of Too Much Information (OboTMI) for this week: I had a dream that I worked in a office with Judy Greer and we went out to dinner after work and had an awesome time chatting & flirting over pasta. she was really an interesting person, my dreams are telling me, and a sharp wit and easy to talk to. Good smile, as well. Then I woke up with it still a half-hour until my alarm would go off. I dozed and the alarm went off and my last memory was of looking into Alexis Bledel's bright blue eyes as she fell down into darkness, like Alice down the rabbit hole.

This little quick sketch doodle is named, "Pi Waffle." Not 'Pie', but Pi the greek letter. He had a whole complete story to him but having sat in my folder for so long and all, I forgot it. All I know is that he wants to be a hero... Actually, he wants to be a super-hero, to be more exact. I do not know if his plan of action was to pursue it masked as a bowl of nacho chips and spring out of his bowl upon evil-doers or what, but I believe him to be sincere.
If there can be a "super-hero" named Robin (a common song bird), a guy like Pi Waffle must have some chance, I'd like to think. I suggest he start a cute side-kick or something, get his feet wet.

This is about as far as this sketch will go. In a larger format, it would definitely go further and with oil paints it would take on a entirely different look (just as it would if I [re] created through digital painting, or even further, in a 3D modeling which I think would be really fun but very time consuming but that is what makes it fun for me; simple and fast is for commercial artists, time, care, and sweat is the heart of art for real artists).

{But, that is just a quick opinion. I sure as heck cannot offer an definition of what a true artist is as I have always held that it is a constant evolution and there is no way but the fool's way to call someone NOT an artist.}

It has been almost a month since I posted last, so I thought I'd post something new, even if it is only half done. Here is the black and white and red.
I am still recovering from my falling down the stairs in the dark but enough time has passed that I have gotten two bills; one from the ER doctor, the other separate charges from the hospital. Merry Christmas just in time for Christmas Shopping, yeah, $400 from the Doc for giving me a aspirin and a narcotic for the pain, $200 for the hospital for giving me a narcotic and not allowing me to leave for five hours because I did not have a ride home for me and my impatient five year old after a nurse told me I did not break both my feet or the black swollen toes.
I've been to Hawaii in the time I have not posted, beautiful place. Both my son and I want to live there, he wants to meet a nice surfer girl, settle down, and make sand castles for a living. I just want a nice patch of earth to grow taro and a studio to draw in overlooking the beach and ocean. Moreover, the girl w/ red glasses working at Island Hemp & Cotton in Kapaa was pretty damn cute. Throw her in the mix and it is a dream come true.
